The CellDetect® technology is a functional cell-based in vitro assay that can distinguish between normal and cancer cells. When staining clinical specimens, the CellDetect® Products enable color discrimination so that normal cells stain greenish-blue, cancer cells stain red.
The color discriminating properties of this technology are mostly reflected in the cells cytoplasm; neoplastic cells have red/purple stained cytoplasm in contrast to non-neoplastic cells with blue/green stained cytoplasm. This discriminating staining phenomenon is observed in tissue culture, as well as in a wide variety of clinical specimens, enabling the detection of different degrees of neoplasia. The staining reaction results in a clear morphological visualization, especially in clinical specimens, where such traits are the foundation of pathological diagnosis of neoplasia.
The potential ability of the CellDetect® technology to discriminate cancer and pre cancer cells in a variety of cancers, alongside the technological capabilities to correctly identify cancer cells in pathological specimens, yields future potential applications in the field of clinical pathology and cytology. In general, these include:
• Early screening of cancer, such as cervical cancer screening program;
• patient follow-up and monitoring, such as monitoring recurrence of bladder cancer, and following circulating tumor cells (CTC's) in the blood for following up on disease recurrence;
• Tool for pathological diagnosis, such as biopsies, frozen sections, imprints;
• re-screening, such as equivocal data from screening programs; and
• Operation theater diagnosis, such as identifying tumor edges, and presence of tumors in lymph nodes.
